Thoronet Abbey
The wonder of Cistercian abbeys
Founded in the 12th century in a secluded valley in the hinterland of the Massif des Maures, Le Thoronet Abbey is, along with Sénanque and Silvacane, one of three Cistercian abbeys in Provence. Combining tradition and modernity, this masterpiece of Provençal Romanesque architecture stands out for its sober, perfect lines, harmonious proportions and exceptional acoustics. In particular, it inspired Le Corbusier to build the Sainte-Marie de La Tourette convent near Lyon.
Every summer, during the Rencontres Internationales du Thoronet, the Abbey resounds with medieval music and song as it was heard nine centuries ago. An event not to be missed!
